What's Up Team!
This summer was all about family. Well, family and a Gold medal…but the two are closely connected.
Let’s take it from the top, even if the top feels so long ago.
Early this off-season, as you know, Ayesha and I welcomed our fourth child, Caius, into our family. To share my life with Caius, with all my girls and boys, is a blessing beyond words.
I went straight from the maternity ward — at least that’s what it felt like — to report for Team USA training camp in Las Vegas. I have to say, the entire Olympic experience was unreal. You have this vision in your head of what it will be like and what it will feel like to win Gold, but the storybook way it all unfolded made it even better than that. If I had to rate the team and the experience and the Olympics on a 0-10 scale, I’d give it a solid…12!
There was a zero moment, though.
Sometime early in our stay in Paris, I made a joke about having spent more time away from our newborn son, Caius, than with him in his first few months of life. I obviously knew that, but when I took that thought and said it out loud it hit me. It hit me how tough that really was—not just for me, but for Ayesha and the kids too. So, while I get to wear a medal around my neck, my family deserves one too for how much they sacrificed so I could focus.
Everything, eventually, came together. Ayesha and the boys were able to make it to Paris for the knockout rounds and, like Ant said, I finally made it too. When we beat France — in Paris! — to win Gold, Canon and Caius were able to join me on the court for the celebration. Those moments are now a core memory and those photos of us together are going to go up on a wall in the house.
In the midst of celebrating the Gold, I signed an extension with the Golden State Warriors. The goal, as always, is to compete with the team at the highest level and to chase Championships.
Speaking of the Warriors, we’re on the cusp of starting yet another NBA season. This will be my 16th year in the League. That number — 16 — represents a special milestone because my dad, Dell, played that many seasons and it was always my goal to match him. I didn’t, when I was young, have all of the accolades in my mind. I just had that number, 16, circled. So, to now be here, to have reached it the way we have, is special and I’m going to enjoy it while the team and I pursue the same result, a Championship, as always.
It's back to the regular season grind now, but I hope to make these check-ins a regular occurrence, so stay tuned in for more BTS of what’s going on with basketball, business, and my family.
Let’s Get It!
